Semmes in July has a rhythm that outsiders miss. The heat pushes you outside before ten, back indoors by two, then back out again once the live oaks throw long shadows. What makes this town workable in summer isn't any single park or restaurant. It's that the splash pad, the shaded trails, the disc golf course, and a growing stretch of Moffett Road eateries all sit within a three-mile radius. A good Semmes summer day is planned in loops, not trips.

The Splash Pad Runs On A Schedule Most Residents Get Wrong
The Semmes Splash Pad sits inside Semmes Municipal Park at 8145 Morris Hill Road, and it's the closest free water feature for most of the west Mobile County side of town. It's open seasonally, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and the hours are not the same every day.

Tuesday and Thursday mornings are reserved from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m., so if you show up at 10 a.m. with kids and towels on those days, you'll be turned around. Wednesday and Friday mornings, on the other hand, are usually the quietest public windows of the week. Locals who want the pad mostly to themselves aim for the 7 to 9 a.m. slot on either of those days.
A second splash feature is in the works behind the Community Center at Viking Park, where the concrete slab has already been poured. That gives the east side of town its own water option and shortens the drive for families around Schillinger.
Where The Shade Actually Is
The default answer to "where do you walk in Semmes" is the Semmes Walking Trail, but that's not the only option, and in July it may not be the best one.
The Semmes Senior Center Walking & Fitness Trail at 9635 Moffett Road is paved, wooded, and lined with outdoor fitness stations and shaded seating. It sits on the grounds of the former Blackwell-Batson Estate, which is on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. Admission is free, and it's open during daylight hours. The pickleball and shuffleboard courts next to it are members-only, so plan for walking, not paddling.
The primitive trail at Semmes Municipal Park runs through the woods and wraps around the disc golf course. The trailhead sits west of the gravel parking lot. Because it's unpaved and shaded, it holds up in the heat better than sun-exposed sidewalks, but the same shade means it stays soft after summer rain. Give it a day to dry.
Semmes Heritage Park at 3871 Wulff Road is the more contemplative choice. The 1902 one-room schoolhouse there is the oldest continuous-in-use school in the State of Alabama, listed on the Alabama Historical Landmarks list since August 1994. The park also holds the Malone Chapel, a replica of the original Mt. Pleasant Church, and the McCrary Store, the newest addition. Walking trails and picnic areas ring the buildings. It's a park you visit at 8 a.m. with coffee, not at 3 p.m. with a jogging stroller.
And there's a fourth option coming. The city's new pickleball park, currently under construction, will bring four courts and a central pavilion within walking distance of downtown. When that opens, the summer routine shifts again.
The practical Semmes summer isn't a destination weekend. It's a splash pad morning at Municipal Park, a shaded loop at the Senior Center trail after lunch, and a plate somewhere on Moffett Road before dark, all inside the same zip code.
Refueling Without Leaving Town
The restaurant scene along and just off Moffett Road is broader than it was three years ago, and it now covers most weeknight situations without a drive to Schillinger or into Mobile proper.
- After the splash pad, kids in tow. Foosackly's is the fast-lane answer. For a sit-down version of the same idea, Semmes House of Pizza handles the picky-eater problem without requiring a reservation.
- Sunday lunch after church or Heritage Park. Mary's Southern Cooking and The Hickory Pit Too both trade on family-style Southern plates. Hickory Pit's owners describe the restaurant as sticking to their "Southern Roots" in serving soul food and BBQ in the heart of Semmes.
- Weeknight when nobody wants to cook. Sabai Thai Cuisine and Sakura Sushi & Hibachi round out the takeout options for households that have already done pizza twice this week.
- Slower dinner, adults only. Bella Italia Restaurante and Hammered Cow are the sit-down picks locals cite most often when out-of-town family is in for the weekend.
The mix matters because it means summer plans don't have to end at the town line. A splash pad morning at Morris Hill Road and a hibachi dinner on Moffett Road are twelve minutes apart.
What's Changing Along The Moffett Corridor
The stretch of Moffett Road between Schillinger and Lott has quietly become the most active commercial corridor in Mobile County outside of the city itself, and several projects are far enough along that they're reshaping the summer errand loop.
The Publix at Moffett and Schillinger has been open long enough to change grocery habits for households that used to drive to west Mobile. A Senior Apartment Complex is going in beside it, with brickwork already in progress. Across the road, next to the storage facility and just north of the future townhome community Admiral Landing, a Jiffy Lube has been approved and is pulling permits. A Take 5 Oil Change has also been approved for a spot on Moffett between the current Mavis Tire and Semmes Therapy. A Wawa is going vertical on its site, which will be the first in this immediate stretch. Fastpace Urgent Care opened last fall with a ribbon cutting in September, giving the north end of town a walk-in option that doesn't require a drive to Airport Boulevard.
A new Fire Station off Schillinger Road is nearing completion, with ceiling grids being installed and furniture already ordered. And in September 2024, legislative annexation expanded the Semmes corporate limits so that most of the businesses residents have long thought of as "Semmes" in the Schillinger and Moffett area are now actually inside the city. That mostly matters for how the city plans road, drainage, and public safety projects along the same corridor where all this construction is happening.
Second-order effect for anyone who's been here five years or longer: the drive time to get a basic errand done has dropped. The same fifteen-minute round trip that used to require a run down Schillinger to west Mobile is now a stop between the splash pad and dinner.
Something For The Calendar
The 52nd Annual Grand Bay Watermelon Festival just wrapped its two-day run at Odd Fellows Festival Park on July 3 and 4, drawing an estimated 5,000 or more visitors, with Sessions Farm again supplying the melons after a spring that Art Sessions described as one of the worst droughts he could remember, followed by daily rain right as the melons were maturing. It's a short drive from Semmes down Highway 90 and worth putting on next year's calendar if you missed it. Later in the summer, the Semmes Azalea Festival returns to the city's annual rotation.
